Neurosensory Exploration Workshop. Orofacial Neuropathic Pain

Neurosensory Exploration Workshop. Orofacial Neuropathic Pain

About 20% of chronic pain is neuropathic, defined as pain secondary to an injury or disease affecting the somatosensory system, which is classified as peripheral neuropathic pain or central neuropathic pain, depending on the anatomical location of the injury or disease.

Painful or painless post-traumatic trigeminal neuropathies (PTTN) are one of the main conditions of neuropathic dysfunction in the orofacial region. Furthermore, in the vast majority of cases, they are associated with previous dental treatment, which highlights the role of the dentist in their early diagnosis and therapeutic management.

Lesions of the peripheral or central nervous system cause neuroplastic changes that result in specific symptoms and signs characteristic of this type of pain. These symptoms must be recognized in order to make a correct diagnosis and thus be able to apply appropriate treatment. In this workshop, we will learn how to diagnose neuropathic pain, based primarily on medical history and physical examination.
