Treatment of Dental Caries: Current Approaches and New Advances
Tooth decay is a disease that affects the entire population. Although the current solution remains primarily surgical, research is opening up new alternatives for its treatment.
What Current Caries Treatment Involves
Caries treatment is one of the main reasons patients visit the dentist. Despite research and advances in treatment, many people still do not address their cavities, which can lead to serious consequences.
More than a century has passed since G. V. Black conducted research on the treatment of dental caries. In his day, the solution was primarily surgical. Despite advances, we still rely on this approach, although Black himself had to revise his conclusions with the advent of new restorative materials, such as composite resins.
Over time, carbohydrates combined with certain microorganisms and fluoride have been key to the treatment and prevention of dental caries. However, research tends to focus more on the search for new materials than on the disease itself.
New Approaches to Treating Dental Caries
Research from the 1990s demonstrated that caries lesions are recurrent. Traditional treatment, which restores cavities, does not eliminate the risk of the disease recurring.
Despite these advances, prevention remains an overlooked aspect, and it will still take time to adapt to these changes. Recent studies, such as the “European Core Curriculum in Cariology for Undergraduate Dental Students,” aim to establish cariology as a specialty on par with endodontics.
At Inspiria, we are committed to continuous progress. New alternatives for the treatment and prevention of caries continue to emerge and must evolve over time.
