The Link Between Periodontitis and Esophageal Cancer

Recent studies on oral hygiene have revealed a link between periodontitis and esophageal cancer. The presence of bacteria in the oral cavity appears to significantly increase the risk of developing carcinoma. With survival rates that are not very encouraging, prevention appears to be the most viable option.

What Is Periodontitis

Periodontitis is, as we know, a chronic infectious disease that affects the gums. Since the gums protect and support the teeth, the progression of the disease leads to the deterioration of not only the gums but also the ligaments and alveolar bone.

If periodontitis is not treated in time, the destruction of these tissues can lead to loose teeth and tooth loss. This is not only a cosmetic issue but also a health concern.

Recent research conducted by various institutes in the United States has collected oral samples as part of their cancer studies. Analysis of the results has revealed a link between periodontitis and esophageal cancer.

The Link Between Periodontitis and Esophageal Cancer

DNA sequencing techniques made it possible to observe the link between periodontitis and esophageal cancer. Thus, the risk of developing esophageal cancer is increased by the presence of certain types of bacteria. These bacteria are responsible for causing the equally feared periodontitis. Specifically, “Porphyromonas gingivalis” and “Tannerella forsythia.”

Thanks to advances in research and our understanding of the link between periodontitis and esophageal cancer, it is possible to take preventive measures. In the field of dentistry, information on the prevention of periodontitis—as well as its treatment and follow-up—is essential. In this way, the development of other, more serious diseases can be prevented.
