History of Dentistry
Although dentistry is a relatively new field within medicine, it is a science that has existed and been practiced since practically the dawn of time. Below, we’ll take a brief look at the history of dentistry.
Historically, dentistry is a branch of medicine that involves the study, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases, disorders, and conditions of the oral cavity. Most commonly, this involves the teeth, but it also addresses the oral mucosa and adjacent and related structures and tissues, particularly in the maxillofacial area.
Although among the general public, dentistry has historically been associated primarily with teeth, this is a field of study and practice that is not limited solely to teeth. It also includes other important aspects of the craniofacial complex. These include the temporomandibular joints and other supporting structures.
It is also often understood that dentistry has replaced the now-defunct medical specialty of stomatology. This specialty was dedicated to the study of the mouth and its disorders and diseases. Today, the truth is that the two terms are used interchangeably, depending on the region of the country or the world where you are located.
1. More on the History of Dentistry
Dental treatments are performed by a dental team. This dental team often consists of a dentist, who is assisted by dental support staff. These may include dental assistants, dental hygienists, dental technicians, and dental therapists.
Most dentists work in private practices—known as primary care—or in dental hospitals. They may also work in secondary care facilities such as prisons, military bases, etc.
The history of dentistry is almost as old as the history of humanity and civilization. Not surprisingly, dental surgery is believed to have been the first medical specialty.
