The Advantages of CBCT in Implantology

CBCT in Implantology: 3D Imaging for Precision

One of the most significant advances in diagnostic imaging tools is CBCT. This method is essential in modern implantology for the rehabilitation of partially or completely edentulous patients.

CBCT stands for Cone Beam Computed Tomography. It is a new technology used to perform cone-beam computed tomography. It offers numerous advantages over conventional CT scans. One of the most important is that CBCT allows for 3D reconstructions with much lower radiation doses than conventional tomography.

CBCT technology is particularly useful for obtaining additional information that minimizes the risk of damaging anatomical structures. Furthermore, it allows implants to be placed correctly from a biomechanical, functional, and aesthetic standpoint.

When is the use of CBCT recommended?

Some of the most important applications of CBCT are as follows:

  1. Comprehensive planning to minimize improvisation during surgery.
  2. Obtaining accurate information on bone height and width in maxillary sinus floor elevations.
  3. Obtaining precise data on the exact size of a graft from an intraoral donor site.
  4. Performing specialized procedures, such as bone distraction or zygomatic implants.
  5. Digital planning of implant placement using 3D images.
  6. Obtaining sufficient information regarding postoperative complications.
  7. Evaluation of bone density and architecture in implant sites.

The use of CBCT in implantology has only just begun. Today, results from CBCT are increasingly being combined with those from intraoral digital scans to plan and place implants with greater precision.

Virtual images obtained via CBCT allow for the virtual design of the prostheses to be implanted. In this way, they can be presented to the patient for approval prior to implantation.

The popularity of CBCT in implantology continues to grow, as its cost is more than offset by the value it brings to daily clinical practice. CBCT is helping to improve implant planning and reduce the biological, biomechanical, and functional complications that may arise in oral rehabilitation.
