Overview of Temporomandibular Disorders
Temporomandibular disorders affect the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and the muscles involved in chewing. Their causes include injury, genetics, stress, malocclusion, and teeth grinding. Symptoms include pain in the masticatory muscles, jaw stiffness, limited movement, and clicking in the TMJ, among others.
Joint Disorders
Joint disorders can include arthritis, disc displacement, or even degenerative conditions. They present with symptoms such as pain, inflammation, crepitus, and limited jaw movement.
Muscular Disorders
Muscular disorders include myalgia, tendinitis, and myofascial pain. The pain can be localized, referred, or even disabling in some cases.
Treatment
Treatment depends on the diagnosis and can range from splints to surgical interventions.
