Milestones in the History of Dentistry: From Antiquity to Today

Although the history of dentistry dates back to Antiquity, implant techniques are relatively recent. Until the 18th century, there were no significant advances.

History of Dentistry: Antiquity and the Middle Ages

The Egyptians were already setting diamonds into their teeth as early as 300 BC. However, the first known cases of non-ornamental implants and dental prostheses were found among the Phoenicians and Etruscans. The Incas, Aztecs, and Mayans also used them. Materials such as gold, ivory, or seashells were used for this purpose.

In the European Middle Ages, dental procedures were primarily focused on extractions. When tooth pain became unbearable, the tooth was simply extracted. This task was usually delegated to the barber. Such procedures were highly dangerous due to the risk of infection, not to mention that the process was extremely painful.

Modern Dentistry

Dentistry as a science was first developed by the French physician Pierre Fauchard. In 1728, he published “The Dental Surgeon”, a work in which he discussed various implantology cases he had performed.

One common development worth highlighting is the use of preventive measures. The discovery of fluoride in the early 19th century as a preventive measure helped minimize cases of tooth decay. Over the medium term, improvements were achieved in this area. However, implant procedures were still limited and very expensive.

Nevertheless, it is technological advances in dentistry that have made the difference. In the second half of the 20th century, techniques such as dental impressions and the use of porcelain emerged. We cannot speak of any restorative surgery that made a significant difference.
