Bioaesthetics is the future of cosmetic dentistry

Advances in Cosmetic Dentistry

The most innovative advances in cosmetic dentistry focus on improving the patient’s smile using conservative methods. The goal is to eliminate biological risks and practices that increase the fragility of the teeth.

The field of cosmetic restorations has evolved tremendously in recent years, shifting from the use of exclusively biomechanical techniques to conservative techniques that require no prior preparation. The cosmetic dentistry of the future—already being used by professionals committed to innovation—is bioaesthetics, which is based on the use of direct bonding and composite application.

This new approach is made possible by advances in modern composites. Cosmetic dentistry harnesses the great potential of these new composites, which can be used in restorative dentistry and not just for fillings, as was the case a few years ago. Their applications are both functional and aesthetic and cover all areas of the dentition. Among other things, modern composites are used to create veneers, conceal stains, modify shapes, and treat tooth wear.

1. Where is cosmetic dentistry headed?

The cosmetic dentistry of the future is bioaesthetics, whose principles include respect for dental biomechanics, preservation of hard tissues, non-invasive treatment of the pulp, and personalized treatment selection based on an aesthetic analysis of each patient’s smile. In other words, it is no longer a matter of using a one-size-fits-all treatment—such as the application of veneers, for example—for all patients who require cosmetic dentistry.

Dental bioaesthetics encompasses a range of restorative techniques such as whitening, microabrasion, enamel reshaping, and composite bonding, without ruling out ceramic restorations. However, to a certain extent, it is a cross-disciplinary field that sometimes overlaps with branches such as surgery or orthodontics.

Although it does not yet have official recognition as a specialty—as is the case with other branches of dentistry—cosmetic dentistry encompasses a range of techniques and practices that require specialized knowledge to perform.
